Conclusion of the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup 2012

The FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup 2012 concluded successfully in Singapore November 11. This year’s edition saw some of the biggest names in swimming competing but owing to the 2012 London Olympics having concluded only a couple of months earlier, many other Olympians were not present. Still, it was in every aspect exhilarating.

Pandelela Rinong anak Pamg is resolutely a national treasure! She created national history on several occasions but it was her culminating bronze medal win at the 2012 London Olympics that sealed her place in the creme de la creme of the world’s best female divers. She is inarguably the nation’s most prolific aquatic star ever and an irrefutable national hero.

A Piscean, born March 1993, Pandelela hails from a modest farming family in Bau Sarawak – a region whose people played a pivotal role in “white” Sarawak history and known for their bravery and resolve. She received her early education from SJK(C) Stampin and SMK Tabuan Jaya in Sarawak and currently is pursuing a degree in Sports Management - Sports Science at University Malaya.

Steve Khiew – A super “10”

Steve Khiew Hoe Yean is only 10 years old yet he has illustrated such kinship to being a convincing champion. Born September 2002 under the zodiac sign of Virgo, he shows such conviction in yearning to do well and pursues his goals with such single-mindedness. Steve was introduced to the pool at age 7 when he watched elder brother Jackson learn to swim and soon joined in.

A student of SJKC Jalan Davidson, he is above-average academically but sits on the pinnacle in age group swimming meets. At the 2012 MSSMKL (Kuala Lumpur School Sports), he took home 5 gold medals and etched 2 records to his name. He then proceeded to grab another 5 gold with 2 records at the 2012 Kuala Lumpur Age Group Championships. There was more to come. A couple of months later at the 2012 National Age Group Championships, he depicted such steadfastness and won 6 medals in total - divided equally with 3 gold and 3 silver.

What’s noteworthy is that all these wins were accomplished at a “disadvantage” year – meaning he was competing with swimmers a year older.Steve credits his performance to proper stroke techniques which he learned from his early coach – former national swimmer Wong Tuck Kar. Presently, he is enrolled into DSA Swim Academy at Bukit Jalil and has been training under Coach Daniel Lim for 2 years. His mother, dance instructor Mayee, is his pillar of strength and motivation. She inculcates good values, discipline and outlook and is conscientious about issues like proper and balanced diet, devotion to training, consciousness and awareness as well as a healthy attitude. She pointed out that a lot of sacrifice has to be made en route to achieving encouraging results.

“Do you engage in other sports” we asked? In a huff, Steve exclaimed that he is also into Double Dutch Skipping – a sport that is gaining huge and rapid popularity amongst kids. Unsurprisingly, he is good at it too. Somehow, this helps to affirm our notions that kids who are good in a particular sport is likely to be adaptably good in other sports too. It might well be that he becomes a good dancer in time to come as well. After all apart from flare, it also involves physicality and techniques.

Blue and orange are his favorite colors. He is naturally attracted to such shades. We sometimes wonder whether there’s any truth to zodiacal influence in our affinities towards colors. Nevertheless, it’s exciting to observe tendencies and inclinations. Blue represents water while orange reflects dare and audacity. Steve has it all!

London 2012 – An awakening

The human body and spirit is truly remarkable. We get reminded about this marvel ever so often and nowhere is a better arena than the Olympics. What London 2012 has shown us is that we can indeed break barriers no matter how often the ultimate is believed to have been reached. We can breach our limits when we dare and we should dare. The United Kingdom besides hosting a successful games, also performed so brilliantly. It’s was their best medal haul in over 100 years. They finished 3rd. overall behind USA and China with 29 gold medals.

In swimming, it was comfortingly inspiring to see world records tumble after a flurry of record setting through “those” special suits. It was a wonder at one time whether we would see world records ever broken again after those suits were banned but records were not annulled. It was a milestone of a controversy.

But today, we can take contentment in knowing that we can still overcome that and create new heights for other humans to challenge. And there’s nothing aided or artificial about it except for sheer human endurance and capability. We saw many emerging young talents who took the world by storm and that too gave impetus to our expectations that we can validly expect greater achievements from these “super humans”.

It was a hectic 2 days of competition at Pusat Akuatik Darul Ehsan, Shah Alam, where the 1st. SELANGOR ARENA SHORT COURSE SPRINT SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP was held last Saturday and Sunday. Races started at 8.00am and only finished at 8.00 pm on Saturday. That alone provides us with an idea of how “eventful” the championship was. According to Organizing Chairman Mr. Michael Yip, the championship created such a sensation owing to its novelty. Yes indeed, short-course swimming championships are rare in Malaysia while interest is as high as can be.
